Fluid mechanics-based design of bearing gap

AeroLas determines different performance metrics and bearing properties from the arrangement and size of laser drilled micro nozzles. For customised air bearings this means that the air bearing performance is optimal for the respective application. There are two types of air bearings:

High-stiffness air bearings typically have a bearing gap of about 6 µm at an operating pressure of 5 bar and the recommended load. This design not only offers a higher stiffness, but also the advantages of a lower air consumption and better damping properties. Recommended for designs that put the primary emphasis on precision (for example high-precision measurement machines).

High-dynamic air bearings float on a significantly more comfortable bearing gap of about 10 µm, which is why for example, they are less susceptible to unevenness in the mating surface. High-dynamic bearings are considered the all-rounder air bearing due to their versatile application areas.
